Chillums
Another version of a smoking pipe is known as Chillum. Chillums are the equivalent of a smoking pipe in India. Long before cigarettes became a novelty, chillums were used to smoke tobacco.

Besides the spiritual Hindus who use the chillum, other ethnic societies have also been known to use similar devices for smoking both tobaccos and hashish. In the West Indies, chillums have been used buy the Rastafarians during various ceremonies.
The Chillum is simply a 4-6 inch conical tube with a narrow end at the mouth piece and a wider end. Inside the tube at the wider end is a piece of stone- which is characteristic of all chillums. The narrow piece of the chillum is used to inhale and always placed on the lips and not inside the mouth. One does not have to use any protective lip wear, gauze or cotton to protect the lips when using the chillum. But mind you, depending on the make of the chillum, it does get awfully hot at the mouth piece sometimes. If the chillum is slightly uncomfortable and hot, one can wrap a wet cloth around the mouth piece and hold it with the lips. This provides a good grip and also prevents the lips from burning.
Besides tobacco, chillums can be used to smoke marijuana, opium, hashish and a whole variety of herbs.
Chillums come in a variety of designs, shapes and colors. Almost all of them have some type of design on the outer surface. Chillums may be made from clay, glass, stone or wood.
Today, the use of chillums is not associated with any special rites or rituals. Most recreational drug users employ the chillum to smoke opium or tobacco and reminisce about the past. All cultures have their own unique way of using the chillum. Most just take a puff and pass it around in a circle.
Chillums sold in the stores come in a case and cost anywhere from $ 15-50. Other names for Chillums include bat, chilam one-hitter, oney, and straight-shooter.
