Caffeine Enhances The Growth of Memory Cells

A recently published research shows that, in large doses, caffeine affects the brain by enhancing the growth of memory-forming brain cells. In the tests caffeine was added in the are of mice’s hippocampus and after 30 to 60 minutes the signal flow in their neural networks was improved.

In the experiment we used a high concentration of caffeine, so drinking a cup of coffee wouldn’t have any effect on the memory. But we may be able to develop medicines to treat dementia or other conditions from a substance that operates in the same way as caffeine.

The research was made by a team including members from the university of Hokkaido, and the finding was announced in the online Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America.
