Comfrey Root Reduces Back Pain

Comfrey root, Symphytum officinale, is a herb that when applied to skin accelerates the healing of tissue and thus promotes the closing of wounds. According to a recent study Comfrey root – in addition to healing wounds – may also work as a pain reducing treatment for acute back pain.

The new findings add to the list of known benefits of comfrey root, which previous studies have shown is effective at treating arthritic knee pain and ankle sprains.

In the study 120 people suffering from back pain without identifiable cause were treated with Comfrey root ointment applied to the back or placebo. In the end the participants rated the level of the pain they were feeling.

At-rest back pain was reduced 97 percent in the group treated with comfrey root, but just 40 percent in the placebo group. Also, the comfrey root ointment appeared to take effect less than an hour after it was applied, according to researchers.

The results this far look very promising. Comfrey root extract shows a great potential to become a popular remedy for treating chronic pain. We are waiting for more scientific studies related to this old herb.
