Mexico Decriminalizes Small Amounts of Cannabis
Mexico is loosening its drug policy by allowing the possession of small amounts of marijuana as well as cocaine and heroine.
This is done to decrease the corruption of official authority and to let more time to be spent for fighting against drug cartels.
After last Friday the possession of some drugs will not be punished anymore but the people are told to get into rehabilitation treatment. The limit is five grams of cannabis and half grams of cocaine.
Before the officials had the possibility to blackmail drug users with long prison sentences which lead to increased corruption. After the war on drugs was begun in 2006 tens of officials have get caught from corrupted activities.
The drug wars in Mexico have killed thousands of people in the last few years. The new law brought up contradictory feelings but time will tell how this affects the Mexico’s war on illegal drugs.
