New Herbal Extract to Reduce Obesity?

Tabebuia impetiginosa, also called Pink Ipê, is a tree native to Central and South America which has a history of use as a traditional herbal remedy. Recently, a group of scientist have discovered that the extracts of this tree can be used to reduce obesity.

The research shows the extract can delay the absorption of dietary fat in animal models. In addition to reducing obesity, the extracts of Tabebuia impetiginosa may lessen the risk of development of type 2 diabetes and coronary heart disease.

The exact compounds which are responsible for the effects are not yet identified by the scientists, however they are currently working for it. At the moment the test are performed using mice, however, in the future the research team hopes they can develop the extract for human use as food supplement or in a medicinal context.
