Russians Send Ginseng to Space

Russians have prepared a new scientific experiment in which cells of two plants will be delivered to the orbit. The aim of the test is to research the plants’ cell development under zero gravity conditions.

The plants selected for the test were red-rooted gromwell and ginseng which both have special features.

Ginseng biomass is a perfect material for making various medical agents, as well as for cosmetology and food industry. Ginseng is a source of biologically active substances called ginsenosides, showing various therapeutic effects.

As for red-rooted gromwell, this plant contains quite valuable biologically active substance shikonin, possessing bactericide and fungicide properties, as well as showing burn-treating effect.

The fifth of February the Russian carrier vehicle “Progress M63” will deliver the cells space. They are placed in a airproof container which will float in the orbit for a two and a half months.
