Ayahuasca

The name Ayahuasca is used of the plant Banisteriopsis caapi growing native in the rainforest of Amazon, as well as of the psychedelic brew made of Caapi and various other plants.

Ayahuasca has a long history of entheognic use in the South America where it was used for healing and in religious ceremonies especially among the tribes of Amazon rainforest.

The Ayahuasca drink is made by grinding the bark of Caapi vine and mixing it with the leaves and roots of other plants, for example Datura.

Banisteriopsis caapi has a lot of hallucinogenic properties which makes the effect of Ayahuasca psychedelic. The effects of Ayahuasca brew may vary depending on which plants are used in the brewing.

The Ayahuasca brew is declared illegal by many countries. However, the Banisteriopsis caapi plant itself is not much regulated, e.g. in the United States Ayahuasca plants and preparations are legal.

Banisteriopsis caapi vine is also known as Caapi or Yage in addition to name Ayahuasca.
