Coca (Huánuco)

Erythroxylum Coca is a shrub growing native in the South-America. It grows to two to three meters long and has large, oval-shaped, dark green leaves which are well known for their stimulating effect.

The history of Coca plant reaches as far as three hundred years from now, and it has a large historical role in the cultures located near Andes mountains in South-America.

In ancient times coca was utilised for various medical uses, for example to relieve headache and to use as anaesthetic e.g. for broken bones.

The leaves of Coca plant are traditionally chewed or made into a herbal coca tea. The powerful stimulant drug Cocaine is made by chemically refining the leaves.

Some online stores sell coca seeds making it possible to grow the plant even in home conditions. However, one must be aware of the legal state of the plant.

Growing coca plant, as well as possessing coca leaves or extracts is considered illegal in most parts of the world. In South-America the law may be noticed to a bit more loose due to the large historical use of coca plant in that area.
