The history of Khat reaches back to the ancient Egyptians who considered the plant as divine food. In the traditional Khat regions it was many times used in social settings before coffee was introduced.

When the leaves of the plant are chewed, stimulants called cathine and cathinone is dissolved. Cathinone causes excitement and euphoria similar to amphetamine. A normal dose is about hundred grams. The fresher the leaves are, more powerful is the stimulating effect. Khat is often used by students and drivers to improve attention.

The legal state of Khat varies. For example, in the U.S. Khat is often treated as Cathinone which is categorized as an illegal substance, whereas in United Kingdom Khat and its leaves are fully legal. It's possible to buy Khat seeds on e-shops.

Khat is also known as Kat, Qat, Quat, Chat, Jaad, and Miraa.
