Opium poppy
Opium poppy, Papaver somniferum, is a flower which immature seed pods contain the narcotic drug, Opium. In ancient cultures Opium was the most potent pain reliefing drug and it was also used for treating asthma and other illnesses.

Chinese were the first to use opium as recreational drug. The popularity of the drug was huge and in the beginning of the 20th century more than 25 percent of China's male population was addicted. After that Opium became prohibited in many countries.
Opium produces feeling of euphoria and drowsiness. The usual ways to have it are smoking and making it into tea. When smoking, Opium it can be mixed with tobacco or other herbs or be smoked on its own.
The effects of smoking opium are almost immediate and last about two to three hours depending on the size of the dosage. Opium is highly addictive, and using it regularly increases one's tolerance quickly. It also has strong withdrawal symptoms.
Opium poppy extracts are strictly controlled throughout the world. Regulations for the Papaver somniferum plant exists but usually it is legal to grow the flowers for food or ornamental purposes.
